Shetland Sheepdog breeders

The Shetland Sheepdog is a loyal, affectionate, intelligent little dog that makes a wonderful companion. However, this is not the breed for everyone. The Sheltie is a very active and athletic dog that needs regular exercise, both physical and mental, and is at his best when given a job to do, whether it is competitive obedience, agility, herding, or any other sport or activity.

As a Herding breed, the Sheltie is a natural barker — when working with a herd, the Sheltie uses barking to help keep his herd in check. With proper training, however, the dog can learn to keep the barking under control.

For more information about this breed, see the Breed Info section.

We are a small hobby kennel located in the heart of Canada, just minutes from Winnipeg Manitoba. All our breeding stock is screened for genetic defects, and only those which test clear are included in our breeding program. Puppies are born and raised in our spare bedroom, and move into our living room at 3 weeks of age. At Skyehaven we strive for the all-around dog — a combination of beauty, brains, sound temperament and good health. Skyehaven Shelties compete successfully in conformation, obedience, performance or just plain family lovin'!

At Herdabout Shelties Reg'd, our dogs are a lifetime commitment, and NOT just a part time hobby.

We beleive that Pedigree indicates what the dog Should be, Conformation indicates what the dog Appears to be, and that Performance indicates what the dog Actually is. As professional dog trainers, we actively compete with our shelties in Conformation, Agility, Obedience, and Rally.

We raise our puppies with an extensive socialization and desensitivity program that starts when the puppies are just 3 days old. Our shelties are sold with a lifetime money back gaurantee against Hip Dysplasia, Collie Eye Anomoly, Auto Immune Thyroiditis, and VwD Affected. All puppies are tested for temperament and working potential at 7.5 weeks of age.

In 1983 I was smitten with our first sheltie, Shane. Bought just for loving, Shane satisfied my every need. In true sheltie fashion, I became addicted to this wonderful breed and decided to establish my own breeding program with my husband Al under the SUMMERLOVE prefix.

Together, we strive to raise our shelties in a loving and healthy environment.

The small size of our kennel allows us to ensure that each puppy is properly socialized. Each puppy, no matter whether destined for the show ring or for a family companion, receives the same loving care. We provide ongoing support to all buyers and hope to continue to serve this lovely breed.

We have been breeding and showing Shelties for approximately 49 years. Through the years, our Shelties have accomplished Conformation, Agility, Obedience and Herding titles, thanks to all the different people who have owned them.

Elegance, movement and good temperament in our Shelties are our priorities in breeding, and all recommended testing is done for health issues.

We strive for the same qualities in our Mini Longhair Dachshunds and our little red girl, Melini, has just won BB in the Mini Longhairs at the Canadian Nationals!

SHETLAND SHEEPDOG BREEDER LISTINGS BY REGION
(PROVINCE/STATE/COUNTRY)

IMPORTANT NOTE:

If you are considering the adoption of a puppy of any breed, it is very important to be selective in choosing a responsible and reputable breeder. The Canada's Guide to Dogs website provides advertisement listings to responsible and reputable Breeders of pure bred dogs and, while there is certain criteria that must be met in order to be listed here, we cannot recommend, nor do we endorse or support any one of these listings. (For more information on selecting a breeder, see the articles on the main Breed/Breeders section: Information for the Potential Puppy/Dog Buyer.)

In addition to the Breeders listed here, the Breed Clubs generally include listings of member Breeders on their web sites and, if not, then a listing can usually be obtained either by e-mail or telephone. We do not randomly add Breeders to any listing. All Breeders listed have requested to be included either via a general link or paid advertising.

If a young pup is not an absolute requirement for you, then considering the adoption of a dog from a rescue organization or shelter is strongly recommended. Each individual breed section on the Canada's Guide to Dogs web site includes listings of Rescue Organizations specific to the breed. In addition, Breeders occasionally have young adults available and many also take in rescued dogs. To learn more about adopting a rescue dog, please see the Rescue Organizations & Shelters section of the web site. This section includes several articles and general information along with listings of shelters and rescue organizations that are not breed specific from across Canada.
