I will lay down my life for you
and expect nothing but love in return.
I protect my officer with my life,
and would gladly take a bullet in his place.
I am sent in to find lost children
and fugitives on the run.
I find drugs and weapons and even bombs.
I am the first sent in
and sometimes the last to leave.
I am the nose and ears of my officer.
I will protect and serve him.
I would die for him and for you.
I only ask for compassion and a kind word.

~ From Homeless to Hero Norton's Story
The story of a rescued dog who returned the favour. Norton was inducted into the Purina Animal Hall of Fame in 1999 for his heroic act.
In February, 2006, a Toronto Police Mounted Unit was struck by a vehicle in which the driver fled the scene. The officer was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries. However, the horse, Brigadier a seven year old Belgian-cross suffered massive traumatic injuries and, for humanitarian reasons, needed to be killed at the scene. The driver was later arrested and charged with Dangerous Operation Causing Bodily Harm and Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Causing Bodily Harm. No additional charges have yet been laid.
In the Criminal Code of Canada, there is no mention of Police Service Animals. Therefore, in Canada, intentionally killing a police dog, horse, or other active member police animal comes with no additional charges, unlike in many US States and countries that do protect their Police Service animals.
