The English Shepherd is actually an American breed descended from the English Shepherd dogs that accompanied immigrants to North America. This breed is an all-purpose farm dog, used for herding cattle and sheep as well as hunting and guarding. He is an intelligent, alert, and responsive working dog.
With a strong herding instinct, he is able to work with a minimum amount of direction. He exhibits agility, stamina, and perseverance to get the job done. He is also valued for his tracking, hunting and treeing ability.
The English Shepherd is a medium-sized dog, well balanced and proportioned. His expression is one of intelligence. He has a thick, soft and glossy coat which may be straight, wavy or curly. There are five colour patterns: black and white; black and tan; black, white and tan; sable and white; and tan and white.

Health Issues:
If you are considering the adoption of a English Shepherd puppy, or any breed, it is very important to be selective in choosing a responsible and reputable breeder. Ensure that the prospective puppy's parents have all health clearances. Breeding of any dog should not be done until after they have been proven to be free of evidence of significant hereditary diseases. (For more information on selecting a breeder, see the articles on the main Breed Listing and Breeders page.)
