    — Sandy Lake is an isolated reserve in northwestern Ontario, located approximately 8 hours northwest of Thunder Bay. It is only accessible by airplane and by ice road for 6 weeks during January and February. There are no vets in Sandy Lake and as a result there is a large dog overpopulation problem. Most dogs in Sandy Lake live outdoors year round, even when the temperature drops to minus 40 degrees. Puppies are born under porches, in woodsheds or anywhere the mother can find shelter. As the number of strays increase they are trapped and shot. Sandy Lake Dog Rescue was created as an alternative to shooting. The goal of the rescue is to find homes for as many of these amazing dogs as possible.
